A progressive voice of the digital age, we are fighting for our digital freedoms in software, hardware and on the Internet. We watch for corporate abuse as well as promote knowledge and educate people about the dangers our rights currently face such as DRM and software patents. We do this with a focus on the Free Software movement and the ideals presented by the EFF, FSF, ACLU, and the hacker ethic.

Facebook: Unblock BugMeNot

Last year, we helped lead a successful campaign against Facebook's privacy invading beacon program. When Facebook refused to drop Beacon, we got their advertisers to drop them. When Facebook said they dropped Beacon, we showed that they lied. Throughout the campaign, we kept on the heat. The campaign was covered by Slashdot, Digg, CNN, USA Today, and hundreds of other news ourlets. Eventually, we won.

Later, a union organizer had his account closed without any good reason. With other union groups, we fought to have it reinstated. Once again, we won.

Just this month, we found out, and reported before any other news organization, that a class-action lawsuit was filed against Facebook and its advertisers for their Beacon program.

In short, Binary Freedom knows that big companies like Facebook require our eternal vigilance to keep ethical, and we know exactly how to do it. It was reported on Slashdot today that Facebook has now banned users from saying the phrase "bugmenot.com" in their messages, wall posts, and other forms of personal expression. In response, some Binary Freedom members have started a campaign to hold Facebook accountable. To join the Facebook group, go to http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=74097855365.

Other ways to help:
*Invite people to join the group
*Blog about it
*Let Facebook know how you feel at http://www.facebook.com/help.php?suggest
*Upload your photo to the group to add your name to our photopetition. Bonus points if you have a sign!
*Put bugmenotdotcom in your status message, which they haven't blocked yet. They can NOT censor us!
*Support and use bugmenotdotcom

Keep checking our site for updates, in case Facebook decides to mess with us as well.
